Four years after its high-profile opening in Maplewood, the Myth Nightclub apparently has closed its doors.
Whether the closing is permanent was unclear Friday, but local concert promoter James DeCoursey of Mr. Chan Presents said the venue has shut down operations, at least temporarily. Messages left at the club were not returned.
The Myth opened in August 2005 at 3090 Southlawn Ave., previously the site of the Just for Feet retail store. A multimillion-dollar renovation transformed the space into a state-of-the-art concert venue and dance club with a 70-foot stage, numerous VIP suites and a capacity of more than 3,000.
Nestled near the Maplewood Mall, far removed from the nightclubs of downtown Minneapolis, the Myth established a regular audience for its weekend dance nights. The venue also hosted a steady slate of touring musical acts, including hard-rock bands like Motley Crue and Nickelback as well as more offbeat performers like Elvis Costello and Kraftwerk.
Most recently, rock supergroup Chickenfoot headlined the Myth on Aug. 10. The venue's next scheduled concert is Snow Patrol on Sept. 10, followed later in the month by Regina Spektor, Marilyn Manson and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. As of Friday afternoon, Ticketmaster was still selling tickets for those performances.
For a brief period in 2006 and 2007, now-bankrupt Twin Cities auto mogul Denny Hecker controlled a company that owned the Myth property. However, in a July interview with the Pioneer Press,
the club's owner, Michael Ogren, said he repaid a loan to Hecker in order to "control my business again."
Yet another example of too much "business" in the music business
And people wonder why I have given up completely on the fairytale of playing venues like this ever again
Remember when someone with a vision and the love of music could get some guy with a stubby cigar in his mouth to bankroll a new place to ENJOY music?
Now, it is just a bunch of window dressing for a glorified cattle barn run by people who only care about maximizing profit, feeding off of it for a few years and then unloading the spent carcass on some sucker who bought into the hype
But that won't stop them from charging you $30 to see some lame ass trendy fuck at the top of their already declining career in an overcrowded "venue"
Oh yeah, you could pay an extra $50 to see it from the comfortable "VIP lounge
I hear the view is spectacular from up there
